Working 13 hours a day, GE Lighting was exposed to sweatshops

How does GE, which is known as “creating a healthier world”, create health for its employees? Foreign non-profit organizations recently investigated that the GE Xiamen joint venture factory violated Chinese labor laws, and workers were over-tired and lacked security.

In response, GE said in an interview with the Daily Economic News last night that the report was inconsistent with the facts.

Tongshida Lighting is alleged to be illegally employed

A few days ago, the US non-profit investigation agency announced the investigation report of PolicyMattersOhio on GE's suspected illegal employment in Xiamen.

In this report entitled "Good Light Bulbs, Bad Work: Workers and Work Environment Behind Fluorescent Lights", the alleged violations of GE's joint venture with Tongshida in Tongshida include: workers work more than 64 hours a week. There is not enough overtime pay; workers work in a mercury-containing environment without the necessary protective training; the company only employs women under the age of 32; does not provide pay slips, causing workers to know whether their salaries are reasonable, etc. . The report concludes that the workers in the factory are often in an extremely exhausted state, and the company’s practices violate Chinese labor laws.

According to the report, many mature workers in the survey said that they had problems with swollen fingers due to long-term repeated installation of fluorescent electronic devices. After the shift, they will have symptoms such as pain, numbness in the legs and feet. Some employees complained: "After working for one year here, I feel numb and the whole person becomes a machine." According to experts who work in factory safety consulting, mercury can harm people's central nervous system, a typical case of mercury hazard. It is the Shuiwu disease that occurred in Japan in the last century, that is, the methylmercury poisoning incident. In recent years, the problem of mercury hazard in workplaces in China is still rare. The incidents of mercury harming workers' health are mostly in foreign countries.

The PolicyMattersOhio report also analyzes that the recent US Energy Conservation Act requires US households to increase the use of energy-efficient lighting equipment, resulting in an increase in the production and sales of fluorescent lamps in the United States and around the world. At the same time, the decline in the production scale of fluorescent lamps in the United States has caused the United States to purchase a large number of fluorescent lamps abroad. The US New Energy Act prompted GE to expand its fluorescent lamp production. The report believes that GE should ensure that the production of light bulbs is in line with workers' health rights in accordance with their own policies.

GE claims to report sensationalism

GE issued a statement to the "Daily Economic News" last night, saying that there are many places in the report that are inconsistent with the facts or that the reports are not accurate enough, and there are preconditions for making a sensational effect. Fang Juntao, manager of the Asia-Pacific communications department of GE Consumer & Industrial Group, told reporters that after the release of the PolicyMattersOhio report, GE immediately formed an investigation team to conduct the investigation. The investigation is now nearing completion and further reports will be announced later.

GE said GE has evaluated Topstar every year for the ten years of cooperation. In September 2007, an independent third-party audit agency audited Tongshida Lighting Co., Ltd., including employee interviews, inspections of factory operations, and record review. In this audit, the agency did not find any relevant employees concerned about the working environment or actual operation.

Mr. Li Guowei from GE Greater China told reporters: "We already know that foreign media have these messages, but I will not make any comments until the final results come out." GE Yi Sen and Human Resources Department Song Yifang told reporters that she is at GE I have not heard of any of the issues mentioned in the report during my work. The reporter tried to contact GE Xiamen, but the call was not answered as of press time.
